Ashley E. Borden

To help paint a picture of who I am, I will give you a quick 5 minute tour through the day in the life of Ashley Borden!! On August 24, a dreamer was born in Haverhill, MA, many years ago. I am daughter to the best parents on this earth; a sister (middle child) to two wonderful brothers; and recently --an auntie to a beautiful niece! Growing up, most of my spring and summers were spent on one of my father's sailboats. From an early age, I fell in love with the ocean and everything it encompassed. You could not force me out or away from the water. I was considered a "human fish" by family and friends and I still very much live up to that title!!!

This naturally led me to become a Marine Biology major at URI for my undergraduate program several years ago. However, being a dreamer, I had this other vision of being a successful business woman in some thriving big city opposed to being a scientist working on grant money for my entire life. So half way through my degree, I switched my major to marketing and graduated with my bachelors! After graduation, I spent a short period as a pharmacuetical and dental product sales rep before happily changing careers by entering the mortgage and real estate industry. Very quickly, I had advanced to the top. I was rewarded very handsomely by getting sent to Vegas, Hawaii, Superbowls, and showered with luxery items! Never in a million years would I imagined that I would have these opportunities unless I won the lottery. But those experiences didnt last and in fact, my industry was hit hard rather quickly, a.k.a- the "Mortgage Meltdown" occured.

Although the actual job is much tougher and demanding, I still enjoy many aspects of it. The best part of my job is not the daily tasks but it was the opportunity to work with people. I have the responsibilty of educating adults so they can make financially sound decisions that will impact the rest of their lives. It was about five years into my career that I realized how much I enjoyed educating and guiding others. Obviously not modest---I am good at it! So a light bulb went off!! Why don't I combine the two things I really love--Biology (marine) and helping people!!!! This was a small piece of my motivation to go back to Grad School for the MATCP Program at URI for Secondary Biology!! I am currently 3 years into the degree and proud to report that I will only have one final class left to complete after my student teaching session before I can enter the classroom with a Master's degree! I have no regrets of my decisions!

Quite Honestly, these three years have been the most stressful times of my life but well worth it! Balancing School with my full-time job and keeping up with everyday life has been a challenge! Whenever times get tough, I keep envisioning the light at the end of the tunnel which for me is being settled in my new career and of course, having my own classroom somewhere in RI (Not to mention, dumping this hectic schedule of running back and forth). What also keeps me sane is finding time to enjoy my favorite things in life---- My two Cats: Little Bear and Zoe and my long term boyfriend- Bobby; cooking cuisines from around the world; wine-tasting; traveling; interior design; bargain hunting; and lastly, trying to make a date with my circle of girlfriends once a month.

Its been a Hell of Ride but I must say, it will be well-worth it! Every week when I spend time in my school and I am working with my students, I feel my decision to teach is validated. I look forward to going back each week and seeing what the students have accomplished on the days that I haven't been there, I look forward to that feeling you get when a student needs you or the feeling you have when you see a student accomplish something they didnt think they could once you helped them along. I love every minute of it! The more and more time I spend in the classroom at my school, the excitement and anticipation grows for my student teaching experience! I feel like I belong to the classroom already. I know that there will be a few memorable months ahead!
